Signs you need a HVAC contractor

• A system older than 15 years, or one that needs frequent repair

Checklist: vetting a HVAC contractor in Hoffman Estates

1. Illinois has no statewide HVAC license, so ask what local license or registration your municipality requires and check it.
2. Ask for proof of insurance and any manufacturer certifications.
3. Get a load calculation (Manual J) before buying new equipment. Don't size by rule of thumb.
4. Ask which utility rebates apply (ComEd, Nicor Gas, Peoples Gas) and whether they file the paperwork.
5. Get the labor warranty in writing, separate from the equipment warranty.
6. Ask the Hoffman Estates building department whether the job needs a permit and an inspection.

Book a furnace tune-up in September or October, before the first cold snap. Book the AC tune-up in April or May.
